4WD Camper Hire in Sydney & Airport

Sydney is a remarkably easy city to move around with excellent train, bus and ferry service. Most of Sydney tourist attractions are within the CBD or around the harbour with Bondi and Manly situated just south and north of Sydney Heads.

There is not much 4WD driving in and around Sydney – so you will have to venture out of town where there are several reasonably well-maintained dirt roads. These road require no special equipment or off-road driving skills. Just rent your 4X4 vehicle and take a cautious approach.

Aussie Campervans offers 4WD Camper rentals and 4WD Cars hire in Sydney. For the beginners this is the perfect place to start your Australian 4WD experience. Pack up your rental 4WD Camper and start exploring the many 4WD tourist attractions just out of the city or head north to Queensland to discover some of Australia's tropical rainforest areas.

Discover Places with 4WD Rental in Sydney

  • North of Sydney – Hunter Valley

Drive your 4WD Camper rental north of Sydney to Wisemans Ferry. Continue North-West on the Old Northern Road and onto Webbs Creek across the river. The dirt road starts along the scenic McDonald River Valley to St Albans. We suggest you select a nice spot by the river for a picnic lunch or head towards the Settlers Arms Hotel for a counter meal.

Continue to St Albans and to the river flat country beside Mogo Creek. The road zig-zag as it climbs the Hawkesbury plateau and up to Central Mangrove-Wollemi Road at Bucketty.

An alternative route with a 4WD hire is to turn left before Fernaces and continue down the Boree and Yengo tracks and join Putty Road at Howes Valley in the lower Hunter. A much longer 4WD  drive but seriously wild and remote country and at the end you arrive at the entrance to the Hunter Valley vineyards

  • 4WD Blue Mountains

There are several opportunities for 4WD rental driving in the Blue Mountains National Park. You can also join the 4x4 tag-along tours run by the National Parks and Wildlife Service or private operators.

Drive your 4WD hire through the Kanimbla Valley on Coxs River Road passing through some of Australia's first large grazing properties. The tracks start to be more rugged and the climb steeper as you headed down into the Megalong Valley.

Continue the return route via the Coxs River Reserve-Jenolan Caves Road through some deep, narrow gullies. Travel in your 4WD rental along the rugged Blacks Range on the edge of the Kanangra Boyd wilderness and take in the views of the eucalypt forests with apple gums and snow gums on the higher ridges. This Blacks Range in seriously wild country.

When you are right up here in the Blue Mountains, it is impossible to believe you are just an hour or so drive from Sydney.

  • The Bridle Track

From Bathurst to Hill End, the Bridle Track is a great two-day 4WD rental driving trip. This is the original route the gold miners from Hill End took to Bathurst to collect their supplies.

You can reach the Bridle Track via the Great Western Highway from Sydney. Turn right to Gilmore Street at Kelso (signposted Sofala) and follow the Bridle Track signs out of town. It is 40 km of dirt road to Hill End and you will cross a couple of concrete causeways on the way.

You can return to Sydney from another 4WD hire track running east for 35 km to Sofala. After the dirt track you get back on the sealed roads for another 70 km drive back to Bathurst. Suggestion: Camp by the serene Turon River or spend the night in an old pub at Hill End.

  • The Wombeyan Caves

There is plenty of rugged 4WD country to explore in the Southern Highlands. You can drive your 4WD rental vehicle to the Wombeyan Caves and back in day. However we suggest an overnight trip to spend more time exploring the caves.

This 4WD hire track is pretty adventurous in places. Drive south on the Hume freeway and take exit at Mittagong. Continue through the township along the old highway and head south to the Wombeyan Caves. The dirt road starts to wind through the hills and narrows to a steep descent to the Wollondilly River. Follow the road for a short drive till you come to a steep and rugged climb to Pass of Killiecrankie and then to the Caves. This adventurous 4WD track will take about two and a half to three hours.

You can take guided tours through the caves and stay at the local campground sites beside Wombeyan Creek. The campground has excellent camping facilities with hot showers and electric barbecues are provided.

Returning to Sydney you can try a different route. Driveyour 4WD rental on the dirt 4WD track heading west for 20 km to Richlands. Turn right on to the Goulburn-Oberon Road and drive approx. 90 km to Oberon. Head towards Sydney via Hampton on the Jenolan Caves Road and Hartley and at last join the Great Western Highway.
