How to Book a 4WD Camper

Essential 4WD Driving and Safety Tips

Know Your Vehicle

Before hitting the road, take time to familiarise yourself with your 4WD camper’s features and handling. Understanding how to engage 4WD mode, lower tyre pressure for sand driving, and operate recovery gear can make all the difference.

Check Road Conditions

The Top End’s weather can change quickly, affecting track accessibility. Always check road reports and carry maps, as some areas have limited mobile coverage.

Carry Safety Equipment

A first aid kit, satellite phone, recovery tracks, and extra water are essential for outback travel. Prepare for the unexpected to ensure a safe journey.

Respect the Environment

Stick to designated tracks, dispose of waste responsibly, and respect Indigenous cultural sites. Sustainable travel helps keep these areas pristine for future explorers.

FAQs

What is the minimum rental period for a 4WD camper in Darwin?

Most rentals require a minimum of five days, but this may vary depending on the season and vehicle availability. During peak travel periods, longer minimum hires may apply, so we highly recommend booking in advance.

Can I drive the 4WD camper on any road or track?

While 4WD campers are built for off-road adventures, there are restrictions on where you can take them. Your rental agreement will list any areas that are restricted or prohibited. Some remote destinations, like Arnhem Land, may require approval from the branch on pick-up day. Always check your rental terms and road conditions before heading off to avoid unexpected costs or penalties.

Are there additional charges for extra drivers?

Depending on the package you have booked, a small fee may apply per additional driver. We allow multiple drivers to share the journey, as long as they meet our age and licence requirements. Some rental plans include one additional driver at no extra cost, while others may charge a daily rate. To ensure all drivers are covered by insurance, they must be registered on the rental agreement and personally present their license to the branch for sighting before hitting the road.

What happens in case of a breakdown?

We’ve got you covered with 24/7 roadside assistance included in all rentals. If you experience a breakdown, simply call the support number provided in your rental pack, and we’ll arrange the necessary help (on-the-spot repairs, mechanical assistance, or a replacement vehicle if needed). While breakdowns are rare, it’s always a good idea to do a quick check to familiarise yourself with the camper and its features before going on your trip. If the breakdown is due to driver negligence or off-road misuse, additional repair costs may apply, so always drive with care.

Is camping equipment included in the rental?

Absolutely! Our 4WD campers come fully equipped with all the essentials to make your road trip comfortable. This includes a sleeping setup (either a rooftop tent with annexe or internal bedding), cooking gear, a fridge or cooler, and basic dining essentials like plates, cups, and cutlery. Many of our options also include outdoor tables, chairs, and awnings for extra convenience.

Can I rent a 4WD camper if I'm under 25 years old?

Yes, you can! We welcome drivers aged 21 and over for most of our 4WD camper rentals. However, some insurance cover may only be available for 25 and above. All drivers must hold a full, valid driver’s licence. Licenses not in English must be accompanied by an international driver’s permit or accredited English translation. If you’re not sure about age restrictions, just reach out, and we’ll help you find the best option for your trip.

Are pets allowed in the 4WD campers?

Most of our 4WD campers are pet friendly. A pet cleaning fee applies and must be added before the start of the trip. This fee is for deep cleaning procedures that will be carried out after your return so that we can ensure the camper is free of allergens for the next rental. We also ask that you keep an eye on your pet at all times as damages caused by pets will be the renter’s liability.

What is the fuel policy for the rentals?

Our rentals operate on a full-to-full fuel policy, meaning you’ll receive your 4WD camper with a full tank and need to return it the same way. If the vehicle is returned with less fuel, refuelling charges will apply. To avoid extra costs, plan to top up your tank before returning the camper. We also offer pre-paid fuel options if you prefer the convenience of returning the vehicle without having to fill the tank.

Do the campers come with GPS navigation systems?

Our 4WD campers are not equipped with built-in GPS. As many off-road destinations have limited phone reception, we strongly recommend using a reliable navigation system, especially if you’re heading into remote areas. You can also use offline maps on your smartphone, but carrying a backup, such as traditional paper maps, is always a smart idea for outback travel.

How do I extend my rental period if I decide to stay longer?

You may request to extend your rental period anytime, but it is subject to vehicle availability and current rates. If you are already on the road, simply give the branch a call and they will check if an extension is possible for your camper. Additional charges will apply for extra days, and during peak seasons, availability may be limited, so we recommend planning ahead. If your rental is extended, the branch will update your agreement and insurance details so you can continue your adventure with peace of mind.
