Campervan & Motorhome Hire in Perth, Western Australia
Perth is one of Australia's most rewarding cities to start a road trip. As the world's most isolated capital city, it sits on the edge of an extraordinary state — one where a single journey north can take you past white-sand beaches, ancient gorges, and some of the world's most pristine coral reefs. Whether you're planning a leisurely drive through Margaret River's wine country or an epic run up the Indian Ocean Drive to Broome, hiring a campervan or motorhome from Perth gives you the freedom to travel in Western Australia at your own pace.
Why Hire a Campervan or Motorhome from Perth?
Perth makes for an obvious jumping-off point if you're planning a road trip through Western Australia. The international airport means you can fly in, grab your keys, and be on the road within hours of landing. From there, you've got real options — head south toward Margaret River wine country, wind your way north up the Coral Coast toward Exmouth and Broome, or steel yourself for the long haul east across the Nullarbor.
One of the smartest decisions you can make before leaving Perth is hiring a campervan or motorhome. Western Australia is big — genuinely, almost incomprehensibly big — and once you're out of the city, towns become sparse and accommodation options even more so. Having your bed travel with you isn't just a nice perk. Out here, it's often the difference between a trip that works and one that doesn't.
Our Perth campervan hire options include:
Campervans (no shower/toilet): Compact, easy to drive, and more affordable. Ideal for couples or backpackers who are comfortable staying at caravan parks with shared facilities. Starting from $55/day.
Motorhomes (with shower and toilet): Fully self-contained with onboard bathroom, kitchen, and sleeping areas. Perfect for families or anyone wanting maximum comfort and flexibility. Starting from $150/day.
4WD Campervans (unsealed roads): 4WD Campers are purpose built to tackle rough terrains the outback and national parks like Karijini, Francois Peron NP etc. The two main configurations are roof top tent models or 2 berths with a sleep inside cabin. Starting from $150/day.
One-way rentals are available from Perth to all major Australian cities including Broome, Darwin, Alice Springs, Adelaide, Cairns, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Please note that one-way fees and minimum hire days may apply.
Top Destinations for a Perth Campervan Road Trip

Margaret River & the South West
Just three hours south of Perth, Margaret River is the kind of place that's easy to fall in love with. The region has built a serious reputation for its wine, but there's much more going on: craft breweries, local food producers, big surf beaches, and ancient limestone caves all within easy reach. If you get the chance, drive Caves Road along the coast. It's one of the prettiest stretches of road in the state.
Recommended campgrounds: Prevelly Caravan Park (Margaret River), Hamelin Bay Holiday Park, Canal Rocks Caravan Park (Yallingup).
The Pinnacles & the Coral Coast
Head north from Perth along Indian Ocean Drive and your first major stop is the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park. Thousands of ancient limestone spires rising out of yellow sand, it's the sort of landscape that looks almost too strange to be real. Try to time your visit for sunrise or sunset if you can. From there, keep heading north through Kalbarri, Shark Bay (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and Coral Bay until you reach Exmouth and the Ningaloo Reef, where you can wade in from the beach and snorkel alongside whale sharks between March and July.
Perth to Exmouth is around 1,270km, roughly 13 hours of driving. We'd suggest spreading that over four to six days rather than rushing it.
Perth to Broome: The Ultimate West Coast Drive
This is the big one. Around 2,240km along the coast, passing through Geraldton, Carnarvon, Exmouth, and Port Hedland before you finally roll into Broome and Cable Beach. Give yourself at least 14 days, and use them. Karijini National Park is worth a proper detour for its dramatic gorges, Ningaloo needs more time than most people give it, and the red pindan cliffs that appear as you close in on Broome are genuinely unlike anything else in the country.
If you'd rather not drive back the same way, one-way drop-off is available in Broome so you can fly home from there instead.
The Swan Valley & Fremantle (Short Trips)
Not everyone has two weeks to spare, and that's fine. The Swan Valley is just 30 minutes northeast of Perth and makes for a great weekend out, with wineries, food stops, and a handful of heritage towns worth poking around in. Fremantle is another easy option, Perth's historic port city with a busy market scene, beautiful old buildings, and some of the best waterfront dining in WA.
Best Time to Hire a Campervan in Perth
Perth is one of the few Australian cities where you can genuinely hire a campervan any time of year and have a great trip. That said, where you're planning to go makes a big difference to when you should travel.
If you're staying in the Perth region or heading south to Margaret River, Albany, or Esperance, spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are the sweet spot. The weather is warm but not punishing, the crowds are thinner, and the landscapes are at their best. Summer in this part of WA can be brutally hot, with temperatures regularly hitting 38°C and above, so if you do travel in December or January, plan your driving for the early mornings and look for powered sites with air conditioning hookups.
For the Coral Coast and Ningaloo Reef, March to July is ideal. Whale shark season runs from March to July, humpback whales pass through from July to November, and manta rays are around from May to October. It is one of the most wildlife-rich coastlines in the world, and timing your visit around these seasons makes the whole trip that much more special. The summer months up here get extremely hot, so most experienced travellers avoid the region from December through February.
If you are planning the full Perth to Broome drive, stick to the dry season between April and October. The wet season from November to March brings heavy rain, flooding, and road closures across the Pilbara and Kimberley. Some roads become completely impassable and certain campgrounds close altogether. It is not worth the risk, and the dry season scenery more than makes up for the wait.
Caravan Parks and Campgrounds Near Perth
One of the best things about starting your trip in Perth is that there are some excellent caravan parks close to the city, so you can pick up your vehicle and settle in comfortably before hitting the open road the next morning.
- Perth Central Caravan Park (Victoria Park): The closest fully-equipped park to the Perth CBD. It has powered and unpowered sites, good facilities, and straightforward access to public transport if you want to explore the city before you leave.
- Woodman Point Holiday Park (Munster): A well-run coastal park near Fremantle with easy beach access. A great first night stop if you are heading south towards Margaret River the next day.
- Discovery Parks, Swan Valley: Situated in Perth's wine country about 30 minutes from the city. Perfect if you want to ease into the trip with a relaxed day among the wineries before heading north or south.
- Karrinyup Waters Resort (Gwelup): A large, modern park in Perth's northern suburbs. Well placed if you are starting your journey up the Coral Coast.
Tips for Hiring a Campervan in Perth
Book ahead during peak season. The dry season from April to October is when most people take their big WA road trips, and motorhomes and 4WD campers can sell out weeks in advance. If you are travelling between June and September, we recommend locking in your vehicle at least 6 to 8 weeks before your departure date.
Plan for refuelling. Western Australia is a big state and fuel stations thin out quickly once you leave the city. On some stretches heading north, you can go 200 to 300 kilometres between stops. Get into the habit of filling up whenever you can, and always carry extra drinking water as a precaution.
Check the terrain and road conditions before booking. Standard campervans and motorhomes are two-wheel drive and designed for sealed roads. If your itinerary includes unsealed tracks like the Gibb River Road or remote national park access routes, you will need a 4WD camper. It is worth checking road conditions with the WA Department of Main Roads before you depart, particularly after heavy rain.
Watch out for wildlife at dawn and dusk. Kangaroos, emus, and other animals are most active in low light and often wander onto regional roads without warning. Try to avoid driving in the early morning and late evening if you can, and keep your speed sensible on country highways.
Consider a one-way hire. One of the best ways to experience a long WA route is to drive in one direction and fly home from the other end. Perth to Broome, Darwin, or Adelaide via the Nullarbor are classic one-way trips. One-way fees apply, so factor that into your budget when you are comparing options.
